Jeremy Healy: Fashion's favourite DJ on inspirational cricket matches and getting catwalk audiences to howl like wolves - Features - Fashion - The Independent

How did you first get into music?. I remember my granddad took me to a cricket match, when I was about six or seven, in Kennington. It was only 10 in the morning and there were these Jamaicans drinking Special Brew or something. By midday they'd drunk them all and started making music with the tins. I wasn't interested in the cricket at all, I was just watching these people – that was the first time I had seen any 'live' music ...

[LondonCultureseekers] New meetup: 'Charlie Chaplin' Guided Walk

Robert <robert@cultureseekers.org>

Announcing a new meetup for the London Cultureseekers Group!

What:  'Charlie Chaplin' Guided Walk (rsvp here for 12:30pm or here for 3:00pm)
Where: Kennington Tube Station (outside the station)
When: Sunday 13th April 2014 at 12:30pm or 3:00pm
Come along on Sunday 13th April at 12:30pm or 3:00pm for a guided walk around Kennington on the early life of the comic genius; Charlie Chaplin!

I'm a massive fan of Charlie Chaplin, so I'll be the guide for the walk.

About the walk
Charlie Chaplin was British and kept British citizenship all his life, even though he spent most of his adult life in America.

He was born in Kennington, London on the 16th April 1889 and lived there until he was 21. He was born into and spent his early years in great poverty in (at the time) one of the poorest areas of London. He joined a performing group and during a tour of the U.S was spotted performing by a scout for Sennett Studios, they signed him up and the rest is history! He went on to star in 81 films mainly during the silent era and playing his 'Little Tramp' character in most of them.

His life is a classic rags to riches story and in his films he was heavily influenced by his poor upbringing. I will guide you round the streets visiting various places that influenced him, the houses where he lived as a child and describing the conditions of the area in late Victorian London. I will tell you the story of his relationships with his mentally ill mother, alcoholic father and the close bond he had with his half brother Sydney. Plus I will also talk about his stage understudy who also went onto become a world famous movie comedian.

I will finish the walk showing you the place where he learnt his famous comedy walk!

The walk is free to 'Full Members 2013', but £5 for everyone else.

The walk will last about 1h 45mins and we will end by going to a pub not far from Vauxhall Tube Station. We will be having two back to back walks, one at 12:30pm and one at 3:00pm, so when you rsvp, please choose which one you would like to come on.

If you can't see us at the station, please call.

Hope to see you there!

Regards

Robert

Simon Jenkins: Why spoil all this to build dams that nobody will need? - Comment - London Evening Standard

Nowhere in London conveys nature more serene than Highgate Ponds. They spring from the woods, glide round the contours and drop gently south, as a visual carpet to London floating in the distance. They are still remarkably wild and un-manicured ... Such rare flash floods as do occur on London streets arise from torrential downpours overwhelming incompetentently maintained sewers, as happened last week in Kennington, not Hampstead ponds ...

Kennington Lane schools

Dear Sir/Madam,

I am hoping that you may be able to help me or direct me to the correct persons/site. Someone in one of my groups on Facebook has asked if anyone knows any details of the old school that was located where the new Tesco's store is now situated. We are not talking about The Licensed Victuallers School. I can now supply you with a map from 1893-6 which shows both the schools along Kennington Lane. It is the school on the left in the map that this query is about.

Thanking you in advance for your time and help in this matter. Looking forward to hearing from you soon.

Kind Regards

Peter Brayne

Update:

I have since found out that the school in question was the Upper Kennington Lane Board School which was damaged by bombing in WW2. A lot of posts about this school query can be found on the Bring back the Lambeth Walk group on Facebook i.e.

Invisible Ink: No 213 - Norman Collins - Features - Books - The Independent

writing is a wonderful outlet for personal passions ... It follows the fortunes of the down-at-heel tenants of No 10 Dulcimer Street, Kennington, a lodging-house sub-divided into flats; there’s the lonely landlady, the ageing Soho hostess, the world-weary Mr Josser, who manages to symbolically smash his cheap retirement clock, the doomed, adenoidal Mr Puddy, and others scraping by in 1939 London ..
