Following on from my recent note about the spate of IPhone robberies near Stockwell Tube and Stockwell Road, this circular (in Item 1) from Lambeth Police emphasises the importance of registering the IMEI number of your phone (of any model) – see Item 2 for details:

1.    Mobile phone IMEI numbers lead to arrests in Lambeth

For the week ending 25 September 2011 the National Mobile Phone Unit (NMPU) has reported that Lambeth Borough Police is the highest performing borough in the whole of the MPS for conducting IMEI checks on the National Mobile Property Register during ‘Stop and Searches’ and for prisoners in custody. This has resulted in three arrests over the past six days.

This top performance follows recent weeks of activity led by Lambeth officers to increase the recording and searching of IMEI numbers for stolen mobile phones.

The International Mobile Equipment Identity number (IMEI) is a unique number associated with every mobile phone handset and if registered, can help police find your mobile phone if stolen.

As part of their action in recovering stolen mobile phones and arresting thieves, officers have:

·         Obtained all IMEI numbers from victims of crime where a mobile phone was stolen
·         Conducted IMEI checks on the National Mobile Property Register (NMPR) before reporting a crime
·         Conducted IMEI checks on the NMPR during stop and searches on the street
·         Conducted IMEI checks on the NMPR for phones belonging to prisoners in police custody

The three arrests for possession of a stolen phone by means of robbery when the IMEI was checked during separate stop and searches were a sixteen year old youth from south Lambeth, a seventeen year old youth from Brixton, and a thirteen year old youth from Clapham.

2.         To find your mobile phone IMEI number, simply dial the sequence *#06# into the phone. The unique 15 digit IMEI code of your cell phone will be instantly displayed. Copy it and keep it in a safe place so that you can find it when your phone is misplaced or stolen. You can also find the IMEI number by checking the compliance plate under the battery.
            Then register it (free) at www.immobilise.com

Apart from enabling police officers to check immediately if a phone has been stolen, registration is useful in other ways.  If your mobile phone gets misplaced, lost, or stolen, you can inform the network provider who can then put the IMEI number for the phone on a shared database. This list stops this particular phone from registering on any network and will be useless for anyone even if the mobile phone’s SIM card is changed.

3.         As part of an anti burglary drive, Lambeth Police will soon be distributing ultra violet pens to every household in the Borough.  These will enable you to mark indelibly attractive items such as cameras, TVs, laptops etc with your house number and postcode.  All patrol officers will be equipped with key-fob u/v detectors so that they can check the ‘home location’ of such items on the spot when they come across them in the course of car searches, personal stop and searches, residential property searches etc.

These initiatives in Lambeth stem in part from constructive discussions Trisha and I, together with a colleague from the south of the Borough, had with senior Lambeth Police officers earlier this year.

MARIE CURIE CANCER CARE - OVAL ZIP WIRE

Marie Curie Cancer Care are hosting the first ever charity zipwire over the famous cricket pitch of the Kia Oval to raise awareness for the time at which the nurses who dedicate their time to the cancer patients start their shift - 10pm every night.

The Zip line drop takes place on Sunday October 9th to raise money to provide high quality nursing care in the home, totally free to people with terminal cancer. 

Each £20 raised will provide an hour of Marie Curie Nursing in a patient’s home, and £180 will cover the cost of a whole night’s care.

The Executive Committee is made up of up to12 members plus at least four Officers (Chair, Deputy Chair, Secretary and Treasurer) for a total of no more than 16.  We also depend heavily on our administrative assistant, Charity Auction leader, Bazaar Coordinator, and Planning Forum head.

Kennington Country Life - Friday 30th September

St Anselm's Church is having a service next Friday (30th September) to celebrate rural life in Kennington. There are several local organisations involved with the service - the Garden Museum, Urban Bees, Tomorrow's People, the Countryside Alliance, Roots and Shoots, Project Dirt, Incredible Edible Lambeth and Vauxhall City Farm.

There will be animals from Vauxhall City Farm outside the Church from 3pm, and a short service begins at 5.30. Inside the church will be drawings and exhibitions of plant life from the children at Archbishop Sumner's school, as well as a baking competition and flower arranging. The Tea House Theatre will also have a stall with tea!

FOLSAP: Lollard Street Adventure Playground

Dear Councillor Robbins

Over the past six months the Friends of Lollard Street Adventure Playground have been pleading with you to delay the closure of our Adventure Playground to enable us to find an alternative model of management that would retain its opening hours to fit the needs of parents and children for safe after-school provision in an area of great need. You took the time to listen to parents and the young children who attended a meeting with you in May. You seemed to understand from what you heard, that this was not just about the need for free and adventurous play with excellent and varied indoor provision, important though that is. But, that this was also a safeguarding issue relating to after-school provision for parents struggling to work, often in low paid jobs with inflexible hours.

You persuaded us that it would be worthwhile our trying to produce a business plan and get properly constituted, in the spirit of the ’cooperative’ council! You assured us that your officers would provide us with the necessary information to do this so that we would be able to calculate costs and research outside partners and funders. We were working hard to do this when we learned that you had already gone out to seek tenders from a long list of organisations with whom the Council already had contracts. In the meantime, without proper notice to the parents and children, you closed Lollard Street Adventure Playground and others.

In my last letter to you (16^th August), I queried the process the Council had adopted in this case. It did not seem to accord with its own code of practice. We understand now that only two organisations/businesses applied to run the Council’s seven Adventure Playgrounds at much reduced hours. In three of the playgrounds this would amount to only one session a week. The contract would be for six months starting immediately.

Now we are told that the contract cannot be awarded as, surprise surprise, the process was wrong! We are told today, that Lollard Street, and we assume at least three others, will remain closed whilst the Council sorts itself out.

I ended my last letter to you, asking whether this was the best we could do for our kids?  Is it?

Diluvial, 2011

Local preoccupations with rising sea levels fuel Diluvial – a work that dwells on the dynamics of flood geology and global warming; creation stories and climate change.

Diluvial is an evolving soundscape and environment by Bruce Gilbert (ex Wire) and Beaconsfield ArtWorks (David Crawforth and Naomi Siderfin). Fifth in the Soundtrap series, this new sonic work was initiated on the Suffolk coast for Faster than Sound, Aldeburgh Music 2011 and is now developed for London.

A new soundtrack will be created on a weekly basis throughout the exhibition and presented within a changing physical environment.

Conic Trilogy is a series of three digital films made in part on Orford Ness, Suffolk, a small island which politically resonates through its history of espionage, atomic testing and international communications.

The trilogy – Parabola, Ellipsis and Hyperbola – references a mathematical concept whereby those forms are all obtained by intersecting a “conical surface” with a plane, in turn, referring to an intersection of different narratives, disciplines and ideologies in the work. A fictional text links this signature assemblage, written by Nooshin Farhid and narrated by Ross Mullan.

The work is cinematically presented with screenings at 11.30 / 13.00 / 14.30  / 16.00 during gallery hours.
