The Sane Society
A talk based on the book by Eric Fromm
Given by Dr. Chris Maddox
Tonight's talk is based on the book "The Sane Society" written by Eric Fromm
in which he argues for a Humanistic and Democratic Socialism. Although Fromm
was influenced by Karl Marx, he believed in the ideal of freedom and
considered that both Western Capitalism and Soviet Communism have a
dehumanising effect on the members of society.
The talk will focus on the main theme of the book: the problem of alienation
in late industrial society. Is alienation inevitable? If not, how is
dis-alienation possible? In a society with increasingly destructive and
senseless competition, anti-social behaviour, irrational violence, the
spread of narcissism, consumerism as an end in itself, financial crisis,
ecological crisis, mass unemployment and concurrent loss of meaning and
purpose in life, Fromm's analysis is as relevant to the contemporary world
as when it was written.
Fromm's radical psychoanalysis shows how false needs created and manipulated
by vested interests give rise to feelings of powerlessness and hopelessness
which prevent the character-structure required to create a dis-alienated,
sane society.
Chris Maddox, Ph.D., has lectured at Birkbeck College, Regent's College, the
Adlerian Society and the New School for Psychotherapy & Counselling, and is
a qualified psychotherapist and sociologist.
