He called on Londoners to try the game, a form of boules where the goal is to throw steel balls as close as possible to a small wooden ball called a cochonnet (literally “piglet”), in a bid to increase participation.  ...

Remainder: Tom McCarthy and Omer Fast’s avant-garde explosion | Film | The Guardian
... Before filming began in 2014, McCarthy took producer Natasha Dack-Ojumu on a tour of  “Remainder real estate”: the Brixton locations that had been “generative” for the novel while the author was living there in the late 90s. Presumably that included the building in Ferndale Road that inspired Madlyn Mansions, though Fast ended up using a different location, in Kennington. McCarthy points out that the racial undertones of the gentrification that has transformed Brixton beyond recognition were already present in the novel: the white narrator, effectively a kind of property developer, also seeks absorption – with his street-crime stagings – into the gritty “authenticity” of the black rudeboys living in the area. ...

Where to buy in London in 2016: the Northern line's new extension from Kennington to Battersea - and the existing stations tipped for growth | New homes | Property news | Homes and Property
... One live project well into its stride is the Northern line extension from Kennington to Battersea. Scheduled to open in 2020, it is the capital’s next major Tube upgrade. ... Battersea is in the spotlight, and nearby areas served by existing Northern line stations are likely to get a big boost, notably Kennington, Oval and Stockwell, which will be just one or two Tube stops from the new Nine Elms neighbourhood, and walkable, too. Eager developers are following the route of the extension through these areas, unlocking land for exciting new homes, some bordering conservation areas and parks. ...

Kennington, in particular, seems stuck in time while dramatic change takes place around it. And this is part of its allure. ... Remarkably, the area has been gentrifying for decades without reaching the heights of fashionability, but the Northern line spur may lift the veil. A station facelift is planned, while tunnel work associated with the extension has temporarily swallowed a corner of listed Kennington Park, recently refurbished and now boasting a pretty flower garden and newly created green space. This formerly scruffy patch of land leads to a low-rise scheme of Georgian-style houses and apartments, with 58 homes in total. ... Kennington also butts up against the Thames, right where ancient Lambeth Palace stands, and where an ugly office block has been bulldozed to make way for Palace View. The development offers 55 apartments with full-height glazing to maximise the vista. Prices from £880,000. Call Taylor Wimpey on 020 3866 0901.
Kennington Cross is the nearest thing to a village hub. Check out Duchy of Cornwall Estate, a collection of authentic looking neo-Georgian cottages built just before the First World War, and delightful Cleaver Square, where Regency houses overlook an open space with a gravel patch that is used for occasional boules tournaments. ...

Q & A WITH RENOWNED ENGLISH ACTOR ANTHONY WARREN - GroundReport
... The second and definite motivation came from a very good friend and brilliant actor, Gary Macdonald. Observing him and the acting world made me realize it was my true vocation. I
joined the Ovalhouse, in Kennington, taking improvisation classes and other workshops. I loved it and decided to be part of the Ovalhouse`s production of “Awarak,” a play based on the experiences of the Awarak indians while being conquered by the deeply religions Spanish. After doing various productions at the Ovalhouse I decided, with the help of my mentor and teacher, Jude Alderton, to go to drama school…I had to queue overnight to gain a place! I loved it! During my last year I managed to acquire an agent and have never looked back. ...

In praise of the tram: how a love of cars killed the workers' transport system | Cities | The Guardian
... Trams were able to cater for the masses, and since the roads were so bad, laying tracks enabled far more efficient progress. The first horse-drawn trams appeared in London along the Bayswater Road between Marble Arch and Notting Hill Gate in 1861. They were a failure, but by the end of the decade tram systems had been laid in Liverpool, Glasgow and Edinburgh too. London saw its first regular tram service running in south London between Brixton and Kennington in 1870. ...
