... Yet he is still best known for his links to a group of artists who never exactly shied away from the ‘anything goes’ tag. In the late 1980s, Coventry co-founded a gallery called City Racing in a former betting shop in Kennington, which gave early exhibitions to artists including Sarah Lucas and is now seen as a catalyst for the success of the YBAs. Coventry himself gets still gets lumped in with movement, having been collected by Saatchi and exhibited his work in the Royal Academy’s 1997 Sensation show. Does the association annoy him? ...

Kennington Park Road residents association meeting

Dear neighbours,

I have arranged a meeting for next Wednesday 4th May at 7pm at St.Mary's Church, 57 Kennington Park Road to which all residents of Kennington Park Road are invited, along with our friends and neighbours from Cleaver Square, Cleaver Street and Bowden Street Residents Association and Neighbourhood Watch; The Heart of Kennington Residents Association; Friends of Kennington Park; Kennington and Walworth Neighbourhood Action Group (KWNAG); and the Residents of Montford Place and the area surrounding Kennington Green / OAKDA redevelopment.

Representatives from TFL have been invited, along with MPs, councillors and council candidates from Princes Ward and Newington Ward. Eleanor Kerslake (councillor for Newington Ward) has confirmed that a councillor from both wards will try to attend as much of the meeting as they can. Kate Hoey has also said she will try to attend and I will continue to try to get a commitment from Neil Coyle.

TFL currently claim that they are prevented from attending a meeting with us during purdah as this is a 'political' event. I'm not an expert on the rules of purdah but I'm not convinced that this is correct - it is a meeting called by residents to which local councillors and MPs are invited.

Given that our local councillors are now engaged in the issue, the meeting will go ahead with or without TFL and it would be helpful if as many people as possible could attend.

We will formally inaugurate the Kennington Park Road residents association at this meeting and use it as an opportunity to share information about what other local groups have been doing to address concerns about the Northern Line Extension and traffic congestion / pollution in the area. It would be incredibly helpful to coordinate our efforts as much as possible going forward.

Incidentally, Eleanor Kerslake said that we should have been receiving regular hard copy newsletters from TFL updating us about the NLE and informing us about the public meetings which take place on a roughly bi-monthly basis. I've spoken to a few neighbours near us and no-one seems to have received these. It would be interesting to know if anyone on KPR has received these newsletters?

There have been a few volunteers to join the KPR Residents Association committee, but we would still welcome a few more - particularly anyone from the Lambeth side of the road.

I hope to see as many of you as possible next week.

All best wishes,

Lucy Cleeve

    Drought and entitlements

    Drought and entitlements
... A different, and more passionately direct,  indictment of a callous government is contained in the tract titled  Poverty and Un-British Rule in India, by that great Indian nationalist  Dadabhai Naoroji (1825-1917): Professor of Mathematics in Elphinstone  College, Bombay; Professor of Gujarati in University College, London;  Founder-Member-President of the Indian National Congress; and the first British Indian Member of Parliament. The book, published in 1901, carries, among other things, a first (and brilliant) attempt at defining a poverty line for India, and seeks an explanation of the poverty of  the country in the continuous and oppressive draining of its wealth, achieved by ‘plunder, not trade’, that is, through punitive taxation  unredeemed by British exports into India. It is worth noting that  Naoroji had anticipated Sen’s ‘entitlement theory’ of famines, as borne  out by this record of a speech addressed by him in Kennington, London,  in 1900:
“It might be asked were not the famines due to droughts? His answer was  in the negative. India was able to grow any quantity of food. Her  resources in that respect were inexhaustible, and when famines had  occurred in the past before she was subjected to the continual drain of  her wealth the population were able to withstand them because they had  stores of grain upon which they could fall back. But nowadays they were  unable to accumulate such stores. Immediately the grain was grown it had to be sold in order to provide the taxation of the country, and the  people were therefore not in a position to cope with famine…  [T]he  difficulty of India was that the Natives had no money with which to buy  food should their crops fail, and hence it was that these disastrous  famines arose.” ...

Good point, Emma: we did submit an FOI request on the results of the 2nd public ‘consultation’ on Tate South Lambeth (TSL) vs Durning. But I do not know if, in the heat of all the campaigning, we have put in an FOI re the GLL plans. I’ll raise with the campaign leaders. What we do know is there was no formal business plan submitted by GLL. We suppose there was no real need to do so as Lambeth intended to cover GLL’s losses in their first year of business. The Council was then going to review GLL’s finances, & if the ‘Healthy Living Centre’ at TSL was not financially viable, to close
it. This of course was no more than a round-about way of closing TSL & selling-off the premises idc. We are celebrating the saving of TSL on Friday the 22nd from 4pm, drinks & nibbles from 6.30. Burglary last night - Kennington Park Road

    Hello everyone,

Our house was broken into last night at around 4am. The front door was forced open to gain entry.

We're currently doing building work and it looks like they were targeting the tools - our lovely, local joiner lost all his power tools - and some of the builders tools were also taken.

We think it was probably too much for one person to carry and that they would have needed a car or van to take everything away.

If any of you saw or heard anything, please do get in touch so that we can pass the information on to the police.

    Many thanks,

    Lucy & Tom
