Another offer for Kennington Association members from the White Bear Theatre
Please support your Award Winning Local Theatre (and save money) by seeing:
Molly Bloom.
Adapted from Ulysses
By James Joyce.
Molly Bloom is a one woman theatrical dramatisation of the second half of
the Soliloquy which closes out James Joyce's Ulysses.
The famous soliloquy that brings Joyce's most famous work to its fragmented,
audacious finish contains just eight sentences. Dense with intimate
memories, half-formed thoughts and erotic fantasies, they run, babble,
surge, digress and double-back for more than 60 pages, encountering just two
punctuation marks on that wilful journey.
In rendering the "Penelope episode" as a solo performance piece, Eilín O'Dea
has tamed that text into speech; finding the breaks and breaths between
thoughts; hacking a trail of lucid sentences through Joyce's overgrown
jungle; doing the hard work so you don't have to. O'Dea's conversational
delivery certainly makes Joyce's words accessible, even though scholars of
modernism may look at Molly's stream of consciousness and suggest that its
difficulty is largely the point.
Performance Dates:
3rd June @ 8.30pm
4th June @ 7.20pm
Tickets: £14 but only £10 to Kennington Association Members
The Anatomy of Human Destructiveness
A talk by Dean Whittington
"Who made the Nazis?"
In this talk Dr Dean Whittington will draw on Erich Fromm's ideas posited as
a polarity, ranging from a love of life (which Fromm called biophilia) to
the deep attraction to death (which Fromm referred to as necrophilia). This
talk will explore how the Fascist/National Socialist ideologies were more
than a product of the Versailles Treaty, as the economic history books
relate. These ideologies emerged in response to certain psychological
effects buried within an individual's character structure.
These insights resonate with Fromm's ideas, explored within the "Anatomy of
Human Destructiveness" of eradicating any love of life and instead enacting
death. Adult political violence can be viewed as a revenge for a personal
childhood trauma, the severance of empathy resonating with Alfred Adler's
inferiority/superiority complexes. The initial sublimation of childhood and
later re-enactment of adult violence emerges from having the secure
childhood base shattered; creating the need to both self medicate and enact
revenge. Mass political parties offer one solution to a personal crisis,
through channelling this desire into an eventual discharge; energy
previously held as internal racket feelings, rains onto an outsider group.
"In order to understand the desire for fascism it is necessary to understand
the self, and not to seek its meaning in the 'necrophiliac' exchange encoded
within a Pound note, Dollar, Deutschmark or Euro."

UNtitled Theatre Company
Present
Beast
An award winning new play
by Elena Bolster
'Smile and dance and move the moving hands of yours
that know to search my softer deeper spots.
You skilfully, begin to join the dots.'
He is an ageing artist. She is a young prostitute. What starts as a drunken
exchange, a night of paid-for fantasy, turns into a lilting, lusting
love-story. Egon and Valie find themselves at sea, caught unexpectedly in
the potent rise and fall of love. Drawn to each other, and bound together
inexplicably, they are happy to exist only for each other. But Egon is ill,
and when disease and decay sets in, their story plunges into murky water. He
finds himself failing Valie, quickly losing the ability to paint or to love.
Drunk and reeling, against the backdrop of clanking docks, swarming fish and
a swirling sea, their story comes to a tragic, mournful end.
'I am the aftermath before the after.
A breath after disaster.'
Switching between lyrical, swaying verse and terse dialogue, Beast mixes
intimate live performances and voice-overs, with a haunting soundscape and
strange, evocative flickering film footage to create the passionate and
vulnerable world of fated lovers.

Brand new walk in Vauxhall on Sunday, 10.45 from outside Vauxhall tube exit 2 - discounts for KA members apply
This is my new walk around Vauxhall, getting its first airing on Sunday,
10.45 from outside Vauxhall tube exit 2, opposite the railway station.
Usual discounts for KA members apply, £9 is full price, £7 for KA members.
There is something very solid and inspiring going on in Vauxhall.
It is known for its historic pleasure gardens, for giving its name to a car, for being home to Jeffrey Archer and MI6, but probably most of all to the many people who drive through it or see it from the windows of trains, for a fearsome traffic junction.
Yet in this unsuspected spot, away from the multi lanes, there are pockets of growth and imagination that flourish.
The more I researched this walk, the more I got the sense of overlapping strong communities; individuals and groups who have created important local projects with little cash and a lot of what the business community likes to call blue sky thinking. Blue sky, and yet very earthed.
This is a brand new walk, having its first airing on Sunday at 10.45. We'll meet at exit 2 of Vauxhall tube, opposite the entrance to the mainline station.
