Garden Visits
SATURDAY 18th JUNE (Cost £33)
Hampton Court Palace These are the finest surviving Anglo-Dutch gardens in Europe, best demonstrated by the restored privy garden and the orangery garden, as well as many colourful borders. The price also includes admission to the Palace.   Full catering facilities for lunch etc. are available. Wind in the Willows, Gerrards Cross, Buckinghamshire This 3 acre, all-year-round, wildlife-friendly garden is sandwiched between the river Misborne and its mill stream. There are over 300 trees and shrubs and 80 hostas. It is a stunning garden with too many plants to name here. Tea/coffee with biscuits are included in the price.
SATURDAY 9th JULY (Cost £22) Penshurst Place, Penshurst, Kent This magnificent garden has been in the de L’isle family since 1851, but the 11 acre formal walled garden dates back to 1346. There are 10 acres of gardens divided into a series of rooms, with large herbaceous borders, formal rose gardens and a woodland trail of all-year-round interest. There is so much to see that I have not arranged a second garden. (The Head Gardener from Penshurst will be our guest speaker on April 27th in the Nettlefold Hall, so, we can find out much more from him). There is a restaurant for lunches, teas etc, but Penshurst is a very nice village and you can sample the pubs which also provide food.
SATURDAY 10th SEPTEMBER (Cost £28) Mount Ephraim Gardens, Hernhill, Faversham, Kent This garden has been in the Dawes family for 300 years, and the family still works various farms nearby. Their most famous family member was Betty McKeever (1901-1990), who was master of the Blean Beagles from the age of nine until the year of her death. The garden has large herbaceous borders, topiary, rose terraces leading to a small lake, rock garden, water garden, magnificent trees, and a grass maze. There are great views over fruit farms to the Swale estuary. Light lunches, teas etc. are available in the restaurant. Marle Place, Brenchley, Kent A delightful garden, created by Mr & Mrs Williams, which includes a Victorian 40 ft greenhouse, woodland walks, herbaceous borders, bog and kitchen garden, autumn colours, scented garden, collection of chickens, artist’s studio and gallery. Tea and a piece of cake are included in the price.
