... Included within the work is the construction of two new stations, to be completed by 2020, at Nine Elms and Battersea Power Station. The major of work is taking place at four sites – Battersea Power Station, Kennington Green, Kennington Park and Nine Elms. The joint venture Ferrovial Agroman Laing O’Rouke is designing and building the NLE. ... Six months later a major breakthrough was achieved as Amy broke through at Kennington, meaning two 3.2km tunnels from Battersea Power Station have now been built. As the 100 metre long tunnelling machines advanced forward, nearly 20,000 precast concrete segments were put in place to form rings to line the tunnels. A conveyor system then took the spoil from the tunnels up to barges on the River Thames. During the course of their journey, Helen and Amy excavated more than 300,000 tonnes of earth, which was subsequently transported to Goshems Farm in East Tilbury, Essex, saving thousands of lorry journeys from the Capital’s roads. The earth has been used to create arable farmland. ...

Gasholder development
Dear Kennington Companions,
I was wondering if you
knew of Berkeley Homes plan for the Oval Gasholder site? This latest
update to the masterplan that they unveiled mid-December really shows
the scale of their ambition with adding 18 storey buildings to the site
where Tesco now stands and a 10 storey building inside the listed
gasholder. This is after the neighbourhood reacted against initial
heights suggested at 8 storeys. Now they have more than doubled it.
Having
done a flyer run around the area last weekend and speaking with people,
it was shocking how few people knew this was being planned, and that
the planning application is happening now and closing soon. Is there
any possibility you could help raise awareness of this?
We (the neighbourhood around the site) have set up a Friends of the Oval gasholder page https://www.facebook.com/ friendsoftheovalgasholder with information on the development as well as links to the Lambeth Planning Portal here: http://bit.ly/gasworks-2
Please let me know if this is something you can cover.
Best,
Kirk Hendry

... Entering the White Bear Theatre’s new digs above the Kennington pub, we hear the cackle of a police radio to prepare us for this police procedural drama first seen at the Royal Court in 1968. Interspersed in the static, are songs from the 60s. Discover a free outdoor gym
By the age of 75, two thirds of us will be suffering from a chronic illness and may be reliant on pharmaceutical drugs to keep us alive. However, some of these are preventable and London is full of free outdoor gyms - although they are not always that easy to find. Some have pull-up bars that you can hang on, parallel bars where you can test out your inner Olympian, and an array of random things to jump over and swing across. Some of my favourites are tucked away in Primrose Hill, Kennington and Maida Vale. Why not go on a Sunday adventure with a friend and see how long you can hang for? If they can train outdoors in Russia, we can certainly do it here. ...
