Who could ever believe there was a time in our proud democratic history when a British government would ignore hundreds of thousands of peaceful protesters on the streets and reject out of hand a petition signed by six million citizens. Unlikely as it might sound, that was the story sketched out in last night’s Victoria (ITV), which recalled the highwater mark of the Chartist movement in 1848, when troops were called out to prevent an estimated 600,000 protesters gathered on Kennington Common from crossing the Thames and descending on Parliament to deliver their great petition containing, among other things, an outrageous demand for universal suffrage.  ...
