Alert: 8 Albert Embankment - New Development and Design parameter decided by the London Fire Brigade (LFB)

Lambeth Village
Dear supporter,
Please take a moment to read this.

Since November of last year our local councillors, Lambeth assembly member and MP have requested the London Fire Brigade (owners of 8 Albert Embankment) engage with the community before setting the parameters for their next development on these sites.

Despite political support at all levels this has not happened.

This week we read on London-SE1 that behind closed doors they have a new proposed development and design parameters.  The LFB decision paper itself says that it will be submitted for planning permission this December 2022.  This we understand has now been put back.

There has been zero consultation with local stakeholders and with the design parameters already set it may be impossible to address any harmful impacts.

It appears from the little detail that we have:
  • the three sites will be developed individually
  • the Fire Brigade HQ (Grade 2 listed) will be developed first and this will still include a glass box on the roof and building over some of the listed drill yard
  • the proposed drill yard hotel will now be an office
  • the workshop site will go into light industrial use as is it's planning policy designation
  • there are no plans at all on what will happen to the Newport St corner site currently a plant nursery (as far as I can see)

Clearly there has been a fundamental shift in approach but none in the treatment of the local community.  Local politicians appear to have had no briefing and we are left to read these announcements in the press.

You can read the LFB decision paper here.

If like me you are deeply disappointed, I suggest that you write to Sadiq Khan mayor@london.gov.uk to ask him to investigate community engagement by the LFB (who report to him), on the 8 Albert Embankment sites.

If you want more information don't hesitate to contact.
Kindest regards
Visakha
