A PUPPY faced losing his leg after being attacked by a pit bull cross-breed.

Andrew Sanders was walking to the newsagents with his two-and-a-half month old schnauzer Wolfgang when they were set upon.

The shocked owner said a “sandy coloured pit bull mix mastiff” charged up from behind and pounced.

The 61-year-old, of St George’s Road, Southwark, said: “The dog jumped on Wolfie, seized him and bit into his leg.

“He had a very heavy collar on but no lead.

"I was straight on the floor trying to get him off and the owner ran up and just hit her dog 20 times with her umbrella.

“She didn’t say anything to me. She eventually got her dog off, and by that time I realised my right hand was bleeding.

“I ran after the owner and said, ‘Can’t you even say sorry?’ She mumbled something and then walked off.

“She was totally indifferent to what had happened.

“Most people who have dogs love them.

"She didn’t look like she loved hers.”

The attack happened at 5pm on Friday in Westminster Bridge Road near Lambeth North Tube station.

The injured pedigree puppy was taken to Goddard Veterinary Group in Kennington before being transferred to Stone Lion Veterinary Hospital in Wimbledon where he stayed for four nights.

He had an operation on Tuesday, and was released on Wednesday evening with temporary pins in his broken leg.

Mr Sanders said: “There was a chance they would have had to amputate his leg.

“It’s lucky it’s been saved, but he could still end up lame.”
