FREE LOCAL FILMS: a rare chance to see clips from "WE ARE THE LAMBETH BOYS" (1959),
about Alford House youth club in Kennington. Also a preview of an updated version just completed by young people in SE1 United.
Karel Reisz directed We Are the Lambeth Boys in summer 1958 in and around Alford House near the Oval: the oldest youth club in the country (founded 1884), it currently has nearly 350 members. The film follows a group of ordinary teenagers at work, home and the club, and – a novelty for the time - gives them space to express their hopes and frustrations. Far from the usual violent 'Teddy Boy' stereotype of that time, the film showed “the strength and variety of their vitality, and their lively, tolerant and complex sense of community”. Music by Johnny Dankworth.
The showing is at a free Film Night to launch the COIN STREET HERITAGE PROJECT, on Friday 18 December at 7pm at the new Coin Street neighbourhood centre, 108 Stamford Street, SE1 9NH. Map at http://www.coinstreet.org/
