Subject: Short Courses on Muslim Cultures and Civilisations at AKU-ISMC
Dear All I am pleased to inform you that the Aga Khan University’s Institute for the Study of Muslim Civilisations (AKU-ISMC) is offering three short courses in October and November 2010 titled, ‘Gender and Identity in Muslim Contexts’ (16 October, 2010), ‘Exploring Muslim Cultures’ (12 October – 4 November, 2010) and ‘Muslims in Britain: Uncovering the Past and Debating the Future’ (20 November, 2010). Gender and Identity in Muslim Contexts is being offered in partnership with the Centre for Gender Studies, School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS), University of London. This one-day course will explore the social, economic, religious, and political circumstances that shape gender roles and relations and will cover a range of topics and introduce case studies from Middle East and Europe. Exploring Muslim Cultures provides a good overview of the different historical and cultural aspects of Muslim people. The course will explore spiritual, legal and doctrinal traditions in Muslim history as well as those aspects of culture, such as art, poetry and architecture, which are sometimes seen as peripheral to the presentation of Islam. Muslims in Britain: Uncovering the Past and Debating the Future considers the long and fascinating history of Muslims in Britain and will explore topics such as migration, identity, education, gender, art and media. Anyone interested in gaining a deeper understanding of what it means to be ‘Muslim in Britain’ will find this course both useful and informative.
