'From Pleasure Gardens to Spies - Historic Vauxhall' Guided Walk - The London Cultureseekers Group - Meet People in London! (London, England) - Meetup

Announcing a new meetup for the London Cultureseekers Group!

Where: Oval Tube Station (outside the station - across the road, near the church)
When: Saturday 20th June at either 2:00pm or 2:15pm
Come along on Saturday 20th June at either 2:00pm or 2:15pm for a guided walk around historic Vauxhall!

We
have 2 guides and we will be starting the walk in 15 minute gaps, so
please indicate which time/guide you wish to go with when you RSVP. If
you've never attended before, all the guides are extremely good and
qualified Blue Badge Guides, so just choose a random time (when you RSVP it might default to 2:00pm for the time to attend, but just ignore that and just come along at your chosen time).

About the area and the walk
It is generally accepted that the etymology of Vauxhall is from the name of Falkes de Breauté, the head of King John's mercenaries,
who owned a large house in the area, which was referred to as Faulke's
Hall, later Foxhall, and eventually Vauxhall. The area only became
generally known by this name when the Vauxhall Pleasure Gardens opened
as a public attraction. Initially most visitors would have approached by
river, but crowds of Londoners of all classes came to know the area
after the construction of Westminster Bridge in the 1740s.

On the
walk, we will discover one of London's lesser known areas which is rich
in history and full of surprises. A famous cricket ground created on
land owned by the Prince of Wales, a City farm which stands on the site
of London's most popular 18th century pleasure garden, a home of modern
burlesque, a secret square and the capital's smallest houses all
feature.

We'll view one of London's best Victorian churches and
take the riverside walkway to see London's worst kept secret - the MI6
building which features in all the recent Bond movies.

The
walk is a private walk for the group, we will split into 2 groups and
we will be guided by Val (2:00pm) & Diane (2:15pm).

It will last about 2 hours.

Cost
for the guided walk is £7 per person for Full Members of the group and
£9 per person for non-Full Members (payable on the day).

Afterwards we will head to a local pub for a chat over a drink.

Please note, we only wait outside the station for 10 minutes after the advertised meeting time.

Hope to see you there!
