Prince's ward by-election special

RESIDENTS in Lambeth will go to the polls on June 4 in the Prince's ward by-election.
They will be voting on a replacement to Labour councillor Sam Townend who resigned from the Kennington seat last month.
Here are the five candidates and their election pledges.
- LIBERAL Democrat candidate John Roberts has been an active community campaigner in Prince’s Ward for 15 years.
He has been a resident member of the Elthelred Estate Tenant Management Organisation since it began in 1999 and served as an independent member of the Metropolitan Police Authority, working with local police to find funding for additional police officers.
He opposes the 17 per cent rent increase in council tenants’ rents and believes the Labour-run town hall’s decision to transfer the management of social housing to a private firm has been a disaster for tenants and leaseholders.
He has been a board member of the Kennington Association since 2006 and was chairman of Trustees at Vauxhall City Farm. His leadership helped save the popular city farm from closure.
- THE English Democrats’ Janus Polenceus joined his party to campaign for St George’s Day events and an English Parliament.
He wants to see a reduction of street crime, high council tax and messy streets in Prince’s Ward.
He believes a lack of discipline inside schools is behind a rise in antisocial behaviour.
He wants to see schools take a tougher line against bullying and drug abuse.
Mr Polenceus thinks the council should invest in providing more facilities for young people to access the arts and believes there should be an annual St George’s Day celebration in Lambeth with parades and festivals in all of the borough’s parks.
- TORY candidate Michael Poole-Wilson opposes the 17 per cent rent rise the Labour-run administration has imposed on council tenants.
He wants to see an end to what he describes as the council’s bonus culture – cash bonuses paid to senior town hall staff despite poor council performance.
He has pledged to work to cut “over-zealous” parking enforcement in the ward and freeze the cost of residents’ parking permits.
He wants to see action taken to end the delays in much-needed improvements on the Vauxhall Gardens Estate and supports a two-year freeze on council tax.
- JOSEPH Healy has been selected to stand for the Greens in Vauxhall at the next General Election but will also stand as the party’s candidate in the Prince’s Ward by-election.
He is an active trade unionist and anti-war campaigner.
He has worked for the last four years as director of a disability charity in Brixton campaigning for better access to transport for disabled people.
He opposes council job cuts and what he has described as the privatisation of council services.
Mr Healey has described himself as a member of the Lesbian Gay, Bi-sexual and Transgender (LGBT) community and a disabled person, and has pledged to campaign for these groups.
- LABOUR’S Mark Harrison is a resident of the Ethelred Estate in Prince’s Ward where he has lived for almost five years.
He serves on the board of the Elthelred Estate Tenant Management Organisation and is a member of the Kennington Association.
He is concerned about the poor services many tenants and leaseholders receive from the the Labour-run council he hopes to join and is campaigning for a reduction in the 17 per cent council rent rise his Labour colleagues on Lambeth’s cabinet voted for earlier this year.
He has said he wants to be an active councillor who is ready to campaign for improvements and stick up for Kennington, Vauxhall and North Lambeth.
