£3.5 million funding boost for 'Better Neighbourhoods'

Lambeth Council, in partnership with Lambeth Living, has earmarked £3.5 million for a major programme of environmental works to make Lambeth cleaner, greener and safer.

The announcement of this extra funding will target six key areas, including housing estates that are in most need of environmental improvements.

Roads and pavements will be resurfaced, hundreds of new street trees planted, recycling facilities will be improved on estates and tired and outdated street signs and furniture will be replaced.

The programme will run from the end of May and last until March 2010.

The areas that will benefit are:

• Heath and Westbury Estates and surrounding roads, Clapham
• Brixton Hill – including Blenheim Gardens Estate
• Kennington – including Ethelred Estate
• South Lambeth – including South Lambeth and Caldwell Gardens Estate
• Clapham South – Poynders Estate
• Streatham Vale – roads include Pathfield and Glenister Park Road, Eardley, Aberfoyle, Estreham, Ellison and Barrow Road.

The first areas where works will take place will be Clapham West and Brixton Hill. Contractors will be on site from 26 May.

All affected residents will receive a leaflet detailing what works will take place and when.

The council will try to keep disruption to a minimum but there may be periods where vehicles will need to be parked away from the works area.
