Police probe jealousy motive in Norbury rapper murder case

DJ Sayps and Charmz aka Carl Beatson AsieduMurdered rapper Carl Beatson Asiedu could have been stabbed to death by rivals jealous of his success, police sources revealed.
The Norbury teenager, who would have celebrated his 20th birthday on Friday, was stabbed to death in August hours after performing a two-hour set at a Kennington nightclub as part of the rap combo Kid n Play.
This week, a police source said one possible motive for the fight outside Club Life, which led to the 19-year-old’s murder, was professional rivalry.
The source said: “Carl played a significantly longer set than other acts that night and there may have been people there who thought he was getting preferential treatment.”
Mr Asiedu, also known as Charmz, and his rap partner DJ Sayps, who is under police protection, were performing their first single Buy Out Da Bar at the club.
The pair were set upon by at least nine men wearing dark, hooded clothes, after leaving the club at about 5am on August 1.
The group shouted one of the duo’s names before the attack, although police have refused to say whether they called Mr Asiedu’s name or that of his rap partner.
Panicked friends bundled the stabbed teen into a car and tried to rush him to hospital, but the promising artist had already suffered a fatal wound.
Police discovered Mr Asiedu’s body, bleeding to death on the back seat of the car, minutes later when they tried to jump a red traffic light in Waterloo. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
His friend Christopher Coco, who had been on stage with the rapper the night he was murdered, said he could believe jealousy was a motive.
He said: “I can imagine that, as obviously not everyone likes seeing people do well.
“If that was the issue though, I’m surprised something didn’t happen some time ago – the single was being promoted for a while.
“I certainly wouldn’t rule it out though.”
Mr Coco, who raps under the name Dirtee Drahmha, said he hoped to get Buy Out Da Bar released as a single, but was waiting for Mr Asiedu’s family to recover from the shock of the murder.
He said: “Obviously the family need time, so I respect that.”
Mr Asiedu’s rap partner was also injured in the attack, and has been placed under police protection over fears he may still be a target.
Detective Chief Inspector Nick Scola, from the Homicide and Serious Crime Command, said jealousy was “clearly a motive” being investigated.
Anyone with information can also call the incident room on 020 8721 4005, or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
A special email address, carlsappeal@met.police.uk, has also been set up by the police for anyone worried about coming forward.
A total of 12 people have been arrested in connection with the incident. All 12 were released on bail until the week beginning November 15.
