Mayor says yes to Elephant T-junction
Wednesday, 25 March 2009
A BUSY roundabout will be replaced with a T-junction after London Mayor Boris Johnson withdrew his opposition to the scheme.
Southwark council had wanted to remove the southern roundabout at the Elephant & Castle in order to make the area more favourable to cyclists and pedestrians.
The work – which formed a central part of the wholesale regeneration of the area – was thrown into doubt in October when Mr Johnson intervened.
He said it would lead to traffic jams in Walworth and Kennington Park roads.
But it was announced yesterday that the £1.8million scheme would go ahead according to the original plan.
