Lambeth suspects to be tried at virtual courts

Criminal suspects charged at Streatham police station could have their cases decided through virtual courtrooms - rather than have to go to court.
The pilot project taking place over the summer will see people who are accused of an offence given the option to appear via video link to a magistrates court, meaning they do not have to travel to a courtroom.
The schemes aims to save money and speed up justice.
People accused of minor offences such as shoplifting or speeding could, if they plead guilty, be sentenced within hours of being caught.
Critics of the system have said it could limit the ability of defence lawyers to put together a strong case for defendants.
But the Ministry of Justice said as well as speeding up the delivery of justice, the system will reduce delays caused by defendants failing to turn up to hearings or paperwork not being ready, free up police time and enable courts to hear more cases.
It says it will also reduce the movement of prisoners, saving money on transport costs and cutting the risk of prisoners absconding.
People accused of serious offences such as murder or rape, could also appear for the first time in court via the video-link.
Streatham police station is joined by Brixton and Kennington, and 11 others in south London, for the pilot, intended to save £2.2m.
If successful, the system could be rolled out nationwide.
