The Brit Oval in Kennington, home of Surrey County Cricket Club and an England test venue, has finally received the go ahead for a £35m redevelopment.
The London Borough of Lambeth, supported by the Greater London Authority, had agreed to grant planning permission in January 2008, but the Health and Safety Executive called in the plans due to concern over the proximity of the nearby Kennington Gasholder Station.
However, after a Public Inquiry, the plans have been given approval to proceed.
The redevelopment includes a 1,600-seater stand, increasing the capacity of the Brit Oval to 25,000, plus a 168-bedroom Arora International hotel.
The hotel chain is funding the scheme.
