Shooting victim Ashley Kemete
A MAN was murdered yards from his home in a hail of bullets – while his mum inside heard nothing.
Ashley Kemete stood no chance as he was blasted four times in a suspected gang hit mere metres from his home.
Detectives hunting the 20-year-old’s murderer told the South London Press three of the handgun wounds he suffered would have killed him.
But at this stage officers from the Met’s specialist shootings team Operation Trident have no idea why he was targeted.
The gunmen struck from close range on Friday night after Ashley stepped out of his home in White Hart Street, Kennington.
His mum was sitting inside the flat when the brutal killing took place – and she had no idea what was happening.
Detective Chief Inspector Tony Broughton, who is leading the investigation, said: “Witnesses we have spoken to said there was a lot of panic.
“They saw people running off in different directions but at the moment we don’t know how many people were involved because of the confusion.
“As is usual with these investigations, and especially because of the time of year, most of the people there thought the shots being fired were just fireworks going off.”
Cops were called to the shooting at a spot near the junction with Kennington Lane at 9.10pm.
Paramedics attended and Ashley was found suffering from gunshot wounds. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
So far no arrests have been made.
DCI Broughton added: “Four shots were fired, three of which would have proved fatal, although we can’t say in what order those shots would have killed Ashley.
“He was definitely targeted but whether the people who targeted him got the right person is another matter, and we have to keep an open mind on this.
“At the moment we are trying to find out about him and his life.
“His friends and family are the people who hold the key to this.
“We need to find out what motivated him, what kind of a life he led and if anyone had any grievances against him.
“At this stage it appears he was in his parents’ flat or nearby and was then shot.
“What he was doing at that time we don’t know.
“We believe his mum was in the flat, which is very nearby, when it happened but she did not hear anything.
“Ashley was someone known to Trident, but he was someone who seemed on the periphery of things we have investigated.
“Understandably his family are devastated by what has happened.
“But I believe someone in the family must know something which can help us work out why someone might want to kill him and track down who did this.”
