A MAN who strangled a former work colleague with her own scarf after she disturbed him burgling her office has been jailed for a minimum of 26 years.

Matthew Fagan, 32, formerly of Gaywood Street, Southwark, was recognised by Cathy Marlow when he broke in to his old workplace, Research Now, in South Lambeth Road, nine months after being sacked.

Fagan battered her over the head and throttled her at the office building in Kennington.

Miss Marlow, 28, put up such a struggle that she managed to rip hairs from her attacker’s head, leaving a trail of DNA that linked Fagan to the killing.

Fagan admitted carrying out the burglary but suggested she was killed by two Eastern European accomplices.

On Tuesday he was convicted of murder at the Old Bailey.

In a statement, Miss Marlow’s father Bernard, from Hawke’s Bay, New Zealand, said: “Cathy’s mother Clare suffered a painful death from cancer 10 months after her death.

"We know Cathy’s death was a contributory factor to the cancer and her mother’s sorrow defied her strength to fight.”
