Lewisham cop-shop joins 'virtual court' system

Monday, 03 August 2009

ANOTHER police station has joined the “virtual courts” system that sees suspects up before magistrates soon after being charged.

Lewisham will use a secure video link from the station to Camberwell Green Magistrates’ Court.

The pilot began in Charing Cross, Central London, in May and has seen 36 cases dealt with, including a drunk and disorderly case where the defendant pleaded guilty and was sentenced less than three hours after being charged.

Launching the system in Lewisham yesterday morning MP Bridget Prentice said: “Virtual courts bring swift justice and in doing so have the potential to transform how the justice system deals with crimes.”

A total of 15 police stations will be linked to Camberwell Green by the end of next month including Brixton, Kennington, Streatham, Peckham and Walworth.
